— Mercedes-Benz is recalling about 17,400 vehicles in two separate recalls, one recall to fix sunroof panels that can fly off the vehicles, and the other recall to fix dangerous problems that could force a driver to shift into NEUTRAL just to get the vehicle stopped.
Mercedes-Benz GLC300, GLC300 4Matic and GLC43 AMG
Nearly 9,400 model year 2017-2018 GLC300, GLC300 4Matic and GLC43 AMG vehicles are recalled to fix sunroofs that can detach and fly away. The panoramic sunroofs have insufficient bonding adhesive used on the frontal and side plastic panels.
In June 2017, Mercedes opened investigations after two reports of sunroof panels detaching from the vehicles. The affected parts were collected and joint testing was conducted with the supplier, Webasto Roof Systems US.
Test results showed the adhesive used to bond the sunroofs was created out of specification, specifically the adhesive used to attach the panoramic sunroof panels.
Mercedes says a search of documents determined which models are affected and production procedures were changed where no more problems can occur after August 16, 2017.
The recall should begin December 8, 2017. Mercedes-Benz dealers will inspect and correct the sunroof panels, but customers with questions should call 800-367-6372.
Mercedes-Benz G550 4Matic, G63 AMG and G65 AMG
Software problems are forcing Mercedes to recall more than 8,000 vehicles with engines that can fail to lose power even if the brakes are applied.
The recalled 2016-2017 G550 4Matic, G63 AMG and G65 AMG vehicles can experience a malfunction of the electronic stability programs (ESPs) while DISTRONIC PLUS adaptive cruise control systems are engaged.
Based on how much torque the engine has, a driver may have serious trouble getting the brakes to stop the vehicle, leaving the driver to shift into NEUTRAL to get the vehicle to finally stop.
The automaker says engine torque won't decrease regardless of vehicle speed, driving situation or a driver hitting the brakes.
The Mercedes recall will begin in December 2017 when dealers will reprogram the ESP control unit software.
Affected owners may call the automaker at 800-367-6372.
