— Volvo is recalling more than 43,700 cars and SUVs to fix water leaks that can lead to air conditioning and airbag problems. Recalled are 2016-2017 Volvo XC90 SUVs and S90 sedans that were built April 15, 2015, through September 19, 2016.
Volvo says condensation water transferred through the air conditioning drainage hose may leak into the passenger compartment because of problems during installation. Once this occurs, moisture can build up inside the passenger area and cause problems with the way the air conditioner functions.
But the automaker says the problems won't stop there if the condition isn't discovered. Additional problems include airbag and engine management issues where the driver will see various warning messages displayed in the driver information module.
Volvo noticed a problem in June 2015 when a customer said they experienced a problem with water leaking and by June 2016, eight more complaints came in.
The automaker opened an internal investigation but while that was going on, 12 more reports came in from the field. Some of those complaints concerned vehicles that Volvo thought had been repaired, but the repairs didn't work.
Volvo dealers will inspect the air conditioning drain hoses to ensure correct installation and if necessary replace the drain hoses. If the dealer discovers water under the carpet, additional work will be performed relating to a wire harness.
The recall is expected to begin on November 14, 2016. Until then, owners may contact Volvo at 800-458-1552 and use recall number R89707.
