Volvo XC90 Recall: Front Side-Impact Airbags Can Fail
Wiring harness routed incorrectly between the front seats and seat frame.

— Volvo is recalling almost 600 model year 2016 Volvo XC90 SUVs to fix problems with wiring connected to the front side-impact airbags.

The 2016 XC90 SUVs might have wiring mistakenly clamped between the back frame of the front seats and the front side-impact airbags. Volvo says the assembly process caused the problem and could lead to damage to the insulation of the wiring.

Once the wiring is damaged, a warning light will activate and a message will say: SRS Airbag Service Urgent, Drive to Workshop. Additionally, the side-impact airbag system will completely fail once the warning light has illuminated.

Volvo says the recalled 2016 XC90 SUVs were built January 27, 2015, to May 19, 2015.

Volvo ordered dealers to stop selling the SUVs and sent dealers the repair instructions. The automaker says owners should have already received recall notices.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the recall should begin in July 2015. Volvo dealers will inspect the routing of the wiring, correct any problems and install a sleeve to protect the wiring.

Owners of the 2016 Volvo XC90 may contact Volvo customer service at 800-458-1552 and give them recall number R89571.
