— Mitsubishi is recalling over 25,000 model year 2014-2015 Mitsubishi Mirage subcompact cars because the frontal airbags can fail in a crash.
However, the recall will be conducted only for cars originally sold in, or registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.
The automaker says if a driver enters the car with shoes covered with snow containing road salt, the carpet can become soaked over time when the snow melts.
If the carpet becomes soaked in the area of the drivers footrest, water containing road salt will contaminate a wiring connector terminal located in a junction box behind a kick panel to the left of the drivers foot rest. If this occurs, the connector terminal can corrode and cause illumination of several warning lights, including the engine, brake and door indicator lights.
In addition, the anti-lock brake lights will activate along with the traction control and airbag warning lights. If the airbag light is on, the frontal airbags can fail to deploy properly in a crash.
The recalled Mitsubishi Mirage cars were manufactured between August 7, 2013, to September 2, 2015.
Mitsubishi doesn't know when the recall will begin. Dealers will install a waterproof sheet to prevent contamination and corrosion of the connector. The connector will be inspected and if any corrosion is found, the connector will be replaced.
Owners who have paid to have repairs performed can contact Mitsubishi concerning reimbursement for any expenses associated with this recall.
