— About 205,000 Hyundai Elantra cars are called back because of problems with the power steering. The recalled cars are the 2008-2010 Elantra and 2009-2010 Elantra Touring that can lose power steering at any speed while driving.
Hyundai says the electronic power steering control unit can wrongly sense a problem in the steering input signals and cause a loss of power steering. Losing power steering while traveling at highway speeds can be a shock, but typically the car can still be handled. However, losing power steering at slow speeds can cause serious problems turning the steering wheel, even more so if power steering is lost during a turn.
The recalled 2008-2010 Elantra cars were manufactured June 1, 2008, to April 30, 2010, and the 2009-2010 Elantra Tourings were built November 1, 2008, to April 30, 2010.
Hyundai hasn't released a schedule of when the Elantra recall will begin, but it's known dealers will inspect the electronic power steering and update the power steering control unit.
