— General Motors is recalling 3,690 model year 2013 Chevrolet Malibus to repair problems with the console shift indicator. GM says the console transmission gear selection indicator can fail to illuminate the selected shift position.
If the console shift indicator does not illuminate the transmission gear selection, a driver could select the wrong transmission position other than the position the driver intended. That could come as quite a shock once the gas pedal is pushed.
The recalled Chevy Malibus were built April 10, 2012, to August 2, 2012.
GM engineers discovered the problems in repeated testing and warranty claims showed problems going back to 2011. GM says the problem affects all Malibus other than those that have base-level instrument panel clusters.
On Malibu vehicles with the base-level instrument panel cluster, dealers will replace the bezel assembly, which contains the control module.
For other Malibu owners, Chevy dealers will replace the transmission gear selection control module.
GM has already notified owners about the recall which began on April 20, 2015. Affected 2013 Chevrolet Malibu owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 800-222-1020 and give them recall number 12162.
