— Toyota Tundra CrewMax and Double Cab trucks have "garnish" problems, bad enough that Toyota is recalling about 130,000 of those trucks.
The automaker says the affected model year 2014 Tundra might have a "garnish" on the center pillar which wasn't installed properly. In the event of a crash, the incorrectly installed garnish could cause the side curtain shield air bag to deploy in a weird shape.
Side curtain shield air bags are different than standard side air bags that protect the body against injuries. A side curtain shield air bag should deploy like a large curtain to protect the head and upper body from the side windows and pillars. Additionally, a side curtain shield air bag can help protect occupants from ejection out of the vehicle and from objects outside the vehicle.
Toyota says it's not aware of any crashes or injuries related to the defect, but dealers will need to inspect the center pillar garnishes in all 160,000 Tundra trucks. Any garnish out of place will need to be replaced.
Toyota didn't say when the recall will begin, but affected owners of the 2014 Tundra CrewMax and Double Cab trucks should watch for mailed notification.
