— Suzuki is recalling over 19,200 model year 2010-2013 Kizashi cars because spiders can cause gas to leak from the gas tanks. It might sound like a crazy conspiracy theory but it's true, and not unheard of.
In April 2014, Mazda recalled its Mazda6 for the second time because pesky spider webs could block a vent hose and cause the gas tank to maintain too much negative pressure.
In October 2013, Toyota recalled 803,000 vehicles because spider webs could clog an air conditioning drain hose.
Suzuki discovered the problem in March 2011 when it found a crack in the upper rear side of the gas tank of a Kizashi.
Suzuki received seven reports indicating spiders had entered the evaporative canister vent lines and weaved webs. The webs affected air flow and caused negative pressure in the gas tanks. That pressure can cause the gas tank to deform, crack and leak.
One small gas leak near an ignition source can equal one big fire.
Suzuki says it is unaware of any accidents or injuries in the affected Kizashi cars, all which were manufactured October 2009 through July 2012.
Suzuki is in the process of notifying owners. Dealers will replace the evaporative canister vent line with a vent line that has a filter on the end. The gas tank will also be replaced if the canister vent line is blocked by a spider web.
