— Mazda has had a rough past few weeks with its Mazda6. Two weeks ago the 2014-2015 Mazda6 was recalled for a faulty power control module that could wrongly assume a failure of the charging system if the alternator belt slipped.
Three weeks ago Mazda recalled 42,000 Mazda6 cars for the second time because spider webs could lead to a gas leak.
Mazda today announced 19,000 Mazda6 cars are recalled because the cars could catch fire from a gas leak, although not related to any eight-legged visitors.
Mazda first noticed a problem in February, 2013, when it was found if the vehicle is exposed to a large temperature change just after the auto shut-off of refueling and without being driven sufficiently to reduce the amount of fuel in the tank, the fuel can flow into the canister due to expansion of the fuel.
Mazda engineers created a countermeasure to reduce the refueling limit where the auto shut-off operates and monitored the situation to confirm the countermeasure worked. It did, and Mazda needs to perform the operation on all 19,000 cars.
The recall just got underway and Mazda6 owners should watch for an official recall notice in the mail. Mazda dealers will inspect and add an adapter to the shut-off valve in the fuel tank and also inspect the charcoal canister for the presence of gasoline. If gas is detected, the canister will be replaced.
