— Chrysler is recalling about 45,000 vehicles to update software, a procedure that will only grow in the future as cars become computers on wheels.
Fiat 500L Transmission Problems
Chrysler says 19,500 model year 2014 Fiat 500L cars will be recalled because the automatic transmissions could fail to shift out of park or possibly not recognize the correct gear selection. Of the affected cars, 18,100 are in the U.S., 1,400 in Canada, and about 20 percent are still on dealer lots.
Chrysler engineers discovered extremely high or extremely low temperatures could cause a microcontroller component to malfunction.
In most cases a simple software update resolves the issue, but Chrysler says 200 vehicles may require shift-module replacement to make the transmissions work properly.
Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango Brake Problems
Problems with the braking system is the cause of Chrysler recalling 25,250 model year 2012-2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles. About 18,700 are located in the U.S., 825 in Canada, 530 in Mexico and 5,200 outside the NAFTA region.
A supplier notified Chrysler about the performance of a component that is part of a safety system that primes brakes when making a sudden stop. The problem doesn't cause a loss of brake function, but Chrysler says the pedal might not feel exactly right.
Chrysler engineers found the flow of brake fluid was restricted. A software update is supposed to fix the problem.
Chrysler didn't say when the recalls will begin, but owners can expect a recall letter in the mail soon.
