— Most of us would cringe if we spilled soda on the buttons of our car doors, wondering if the liquid will seep into the electronics and wiring. It wouldn't take much for that to happen if the buttons and switches aren't properly sealed, a problem Chrysler knows about in almost 645,000 minivans.
Chrysler is recalling about 645,000 model year 2010-2014 Chrysler Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans because the vent window switch in the driver's door armrest can overheat and melt.
Chrysler discovered the problem in October, 2012, when six melted vent switches had to be replaced under warranty. The overheated switch could cause anything from a burning odor to a door fire.
Chrysler engineers determined if a specific amount of "syrupy liquid" leaked into the switch, overheating could occur between the power and ground contacts of the switch circuit board.
The recall should begin in June, 2014. Chrysler dealers will replace the vent window switch with a newer version to prevent damage to the electronics.
