— Following a federal investigation into model year 2000-2003 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable vehicles, Ford has announced they will conduct a customer satisfaction program to fix problems with the speed control cables.
According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the cables can be partially disconnected or damaged when someone is working under the hood.
A damaged cable could interfere with the throttle's full return to idle when the accelerator pedal is released.
The affected vehicles include over 467,000 vehicles built at the Chicago assembly plant and equipped with 3.0L 4V Duratec engines.
Ford dealers will inspect the speed control cables and replace them if any part of the collar retention tab is missing.
Dealers will also install a collar reinforcement clip at the speed control cable collar in all vehicles.
