— Following a federal investigation into brake problems in the BMW 328i, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says over 76,000 BMW models will be recalled.
The cars include model year 2012 through 2014 BMW 3-Series, 5-Series, X1 SAV, X3 SAV, and Z4 vehicles equipped with 4-cylinder engines.
BMW says the vacuum pump can malfunction because oil supply to the pump can become blocked. The blockage occurs because a seal disk in the camshaft can move when it shouldn't. A driver could lose all power brakes if the pump fails.
The recall is planned to begin in November, 2013, at least as far as letting owners know of the problem. BMW dealers probably won't have the needed parts until December.
Dealers will will install a locking ring into the camshaft to keep the seal disk in place.
