Feds Open Investigation Into Ford Crown Victoria
Complaints allege total steering control loss in certain Crown Victoria police vehicles.

— The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation after complaints of lost steering control in the 2005-2008 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor.

According to the Office of Defects Investigation, two complaints involved police vehicles and another complaint involved a local government vehicle.

All three complaints allege a separation of the upper intermediate shaft from the steering column at low travel speeds. Once that happened, all steering control was lost. You can imagine what could have happened if the vehicles would have been traveling at high speeds.

The feds have also received 10 complaints alleging that based on inspections, the upper intermediate shaft was beginning to separate from the steering column.

NHTSA’s investigation will determine if a recall should be ordered on the Crown Victoria. CarComplaints.com will keep you posted as updates become available.
