— The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that drivers of certain BMW's can expect a recall notice sometime in July.
The NHTSA says the recall involves 2012 X5's equipped with a diesel engine and 2013 X5 and X6 models. The problem seems to come from an error BMW made when building the vehicles.
According to the NHTSA, a "machining error" of the steering gear surface can cause power steering fluid to leak. If the fluid sprays onto hot exhaust parts, the next call you make might be to 911 for a fire truck.
Instead of that, call BMW at 800-525-7417. Your dealer will inspect the steering gear and replace it for free, if needed.
