CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2nd generation XC70 has a transmission issue and the 2003 model year seems to be the worst of it. These are still solidly built and comfortable cars, but if you're looking at buying used you might be better off avoiding the 2003 unless it has already had its transmission replaced.

I tried shifting my vehicle into manual mode. I heard a pop and the shift lever suddenly was loose when it's shifted into gear select (manual) mode. It's still drivable but annoying because it sometimes will pop over to manual from drive and then it can be a struggle to get it back over to drive. When it is in the gear select position it lost it's spring action when I push it forward to shift up.
It still feels normal when I pull back to shift down. I had a transmission place look at it and they said that with used parts it would be approximately $450 to fix. Holding off on the repair for now since I just finished some transmission maintenance. Apart from that annoyance, it drives fine.
