CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2nd generation XC70 has a transmission issue and the 2003 model year seems to be the worst of it. These are still solidly built and comfortable cars, but if you're looking at buying used you might be better off avoiding the 2003 unless it has already had its transmission replaced.

The dealer said it was the strut. They replaced it, but I still had the noise. So I paid $700 to replace a STRUT THAT WASN'T BAD. I had told them that I thought it was the swing arm or the sway bar. They said that cannot be the problem. I took it to my local mechanic and he figured it out. The Swing arm and the sway bar bushings and links were bad. Another $700 took care of the problem. Rides like a new car now.

Beware of Volvo Village in Danvers, MA. They have inexperienced and untrained Volvo mechanics.

Update from Dec 24, 2012: I've read on other sites that this suspension problem on the 2003 XC70 Volvo is a common problem.
