I am a very good mechanic with lots of experience. And I did not document all the problems of too many cars. But yes, Volvo's V70, V70xc, and xc70 from 2001 to 2006 all have this problem. I met at least 20 people junking their car because of this issue. Also the 2002 Volvo has a very bad fuel leakage problem right at the plastic head mounted on gas tanks. They also have instrument cluster chip failure, cluster failure, all gauges, everything dies. And then they have transmissions failing. But worst of all a surprise engine killer is the front camshaft seal popping out.
I bought many Volvos and still have 3 v70 Volvos, 2001, 2002, and 2006 xc. My 2002 Volvo has over a million miles on original engine and transmission even when I had these problems I managed to catch them within 5 seconds or so saving the motor and saving the car from catching fire from fuel leak on inside. Volvo has some half-brained engineers designing these cars. The best car maker turned into a very bad one. Each car costs a fortune to repair. Most people junked them. They also have throttle body ETM issues, and many more issues like water leaking into the main fuse box and much more.
I would give Volvo a great lesson on how to make a car. Not joking. Because I have over 1 million miles on at least 2002 Volvo v70xc. Instrument clusters changed many times and still goes bad. I bought many Volvos for $100 or so in pristine condition because of engine seals knocked out and other issues that forces an owner to junk them. Wake up Volvo - your self driving vehicle already killed 1 or 2 people walking on the road! Your car did not even apply brakes. Great cars they were, a long time ago. Not any more.
