The contact owns a 2000 Volvo S80. The contact stated that she was a beneficiary of a class action settlement regarding a defective throttle module in the engine. The Volvo dealer would not repair the failure due to the warranty lawsuit. The lawsuit will expire whenever the vehicle becomes ten years old or reaches 200,000 miles. The failure causes the engine to surge from fast to slow or vice versa. The contact stated that there was no dealer nearby to repair the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but they stated that the computer would not diagnose the failure. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop and they determined the cause of the failure. The failure mileage was 108,000.

The contact owns a 2000 Volvo S80. Whenever the vehicle is at a stop, it will surge forward unless the contact applies a great amount of pressure on the brake pedal. Also, while driving at any speed, the engine will suddenly stall and shut off. The vehicle is able to be restarted immediately after the failure. The vehicle has been diagnosed by the dealer several times, but the failure still persists. The current mileage was 50,300 and failure mileage was 44,000.

In early Jul 05, I experienced electronic throttle system (ets) problems with my 2000 Volvo S80. Particularly concerning to me from a safety standpoint was that several times, including when I was in highway driving situations, the car on its own suddenly accelerated and decelerated, hesitated on acceleration or would not accelerate, and displayed engine stall symptoms. The computer indicated degraded engine performance (limp mode). I lined up a service appointment with lovering Volvo of meredith. After lovering's first attempt at repairs, the car was still not operating normally and I took it back to the dealer a second time. I paid a total of $2,074.42 for repairs, $1,741.44 the first time and $332.98 during the second visit. In accordance with a June 2006 Volvo letter, I took my S80 back to lovering for inspection and ets software upgrade. I submitted to Volvo a claim for reimbursement for ets repairs. The advertising checking bureau (acb), which administers the ets warranty rebate program on behalf of Volvo, sent me a check for $747.93 for the ets repairs. Acb said it was authorized to reimburse me only the $587.93 cost of electronic throttle body, electronic throttle module reload, and gasket, and associated $160 labor cost. Acb advised me to contact the Volvo customer care center. A Volvo customer care representative confirmed that acb had done as instructed and suggested that I take up the matter of the remaining repair costs with lovering. The lovering invoices, dated July 26, 2005 and August 8, 2005, indicate that a $295.65 portion of the initial $1,741.44 repair bill had to do with totally unrelated steering/suspension and engine mount repairs. Still questionable in my mind are the oxygen sensor repairs which added up to $897.86 and the subsequent mass air flow sensor repairs which came to $332.98. I suspect the problems are all ets-related and I am currently pursuing the matter with the dealership.

There was nothing leading up to the engine stalling out, it just happened all of a sudden. I have had a sudden loss of speed/ power to vehicle in the past and also just recently...along with no ability to steer while driving in highway traffic and then the vehicle will just stall out completely in the middle of traffic, unable to restart until the car feels like cranking up again. I took the vehicle to a Volvo repair shop and the mechanic could find a problem but a week later the same thing happened again. The stalling happens sporadically, so you just never know when it will happen next.

Contact states owned a 2000 Volvo S80, and the vehicle stalled several times. While driving at normal speeds, slowing down to make a left turnand vehicle stalled the first time. The second time this happened the consumer was driving at normal speeds when vehicle stalled. A couple of times the vehicle would not go into reverse. The vehicle was towed to the local service dealer when this happened. Consumer stated saw on television where there had been several cases with Volvo models who were having stalling problems. The vehicle has been to the service dealer on two separate occasions, but the consumer ccould not remember what repairs were done. Consumer no longer had the vehicle because she did not feel safe driving it. The manufacturer has not been contacted.

Engine constantly surges forward while brakes are applied. At a stoplight, the car will just suddenly lurch forward. On highway, car lost power and acceleration. When I pulled over, the engine cut off. Dealership told me to the problem was the electronic throttle, which I replaced for $2100. The car continues to have engine surges.

My wife was driving the car and making a left turn across traffic (with plenty of room to make the turn). As she decelerated to make the turn, the car died. As this happened, of course all power steering and brakes were lost. She narrowly avoided an accident, as she was stuck out in the intersection. I have spent some time researching this problem and its causes and I have found ample supporting information that many owners of this vehicle are having this problem of the car dying on deceleration. The problem is apparently due to an electronic throttle module (ETM). This is a unique system installed by Volvo that does away with the traditional throttle cable. Apparently these devices are failing regularly, and must be replaced to the tune of about $1000 cost to the owner of the vehicle. I think that if a normal throttle-cable vehicle had a great tendency to break throttle cables, even on cars with low miles, this would lead to some sort of recall because this leads to an unsafe situation. This was such a near miss for my wife that she is afraid to drive the car until it is repaired. Check www.brickboard.com site. This is a site for Volvo owners. A search for S80 and ETM will generate many hits from owners who have had the same unsafe condition leading to a need to replace this faulty device.
