We were driving on the freeway in Southern California during evening rush hour traffic heading to San Diego when the engine on my 2008 Volvo s60 2.6T suddenly lost power and stopped. Fortunately, I was driving in the right hand lane and was able to pull the car off to the shoulder and stop safely. This may have been a very tragic outcome if I had been in the fast lane, especially with this sudden loss of engine power. I don't think we would have been safe - not on the freeway! I had filled the gas tank that morning and the fuel gauge showed that I had about half a tank of gasoline. We got towed to a Volvo dealer there in southern California and the problem turned out to be a faulty fuel pump and sensors. So we actually did not have a half tank of gasoline - the fuel tank was almost empty.
I have always felt that this car was very dependable and safe - it has has never given me any major trouble before but now I am not so sure it is that dependable or safe when something as critical as the fuel pump malfunctions on a fairly newer car.
I see on this forum that Volvo has recalled the fuel pump on other Volvo models and now I wonder if the fuel pump on the 2008 Volvo s60 is also defective. The car is still with the dealer since the part has to come from the east coast. It is going to cost us almost $1200 for parts and labor when all is said and done. I plan to contact Volvo of American to get some information on any recalls for this part, but has anyone else experienced this type of problem with their Volvo? All suggestions and comments welcome!
