The PCV valve has a simple rubber diaphragm which of course eventually will need replacement. However Volkswagen decided to build this part into the valve cover.
My biggest complaint is that Volkswagen went the cheap route (for their manufacturing) and built a part that they knew would require maintenance into a part that is very difficult to remove and that requires no maintenance. 90% of cars have a separate PCV valve that is a 5 minute and $15 repair. Costs for this can go upwards of $1600. And that is only if you haven't been driving around with a bad PCV which can cause you to blow gaskets and most commonly, your rear main seal. That would require the engine to be dropped and a standalone repair bill of over $4,000.
