VW used cheap plastic vacuum lines for their brake assist system. If a hose cracks and loses pressure, the brake pedal will feel like you're stepping on a cinder block. Happened to me, thankfully I was in a parking lot when it happened and used the parking brake to limp it home. The line underneath the cowl on the driver's side is what broke in my case
