there's a known defect with the timing chain tensioner - VW is currently on the fourth version. This failure causes catostrophic engine failure - that cost between $4000 to $6000 depending on whether the entire engine or cylinder head needs replacement. I'm told VW issued a service bulletin (12-15-01), dated July 23rd, 2012, that addresses this problem and the fix.
