I just took our 2012 Tiguan in to local shop for 60,000 mile oil change and check-up. Mechanic said I have a Rear Main Seal oil leak and advised me to take car to VW dealership. He mostly seems to do routine, quick fix stuff. He said there is also a second leak, which seems to be coming from the timing cover gasket. I contacted VW dealer and was quoted $1,200 to replace Rear Main Seal (8 hours labor). That seems in line with what others have posted here. I also see many people citing problems with PCV as root cause of Rear Main Seal leaks. So, I asked about replacing that and quote was $416 (1 hour labor). VW dealer mentioned that there are two Timing Cover Gaskets – Upper and Lower. Quote for upper was ($600, 1.5 hours labor), quote for lower was ($1,200, 6 hours labor).
I can’t see any pricing info on line for replacement of upper and lower timing gaskets, so I wanted to ask if these are reasonable prices? Also, is it fair to assume that if I am bundling 2 or 3 of these jobs, total labor hours should be less than the individually priced jobs? And if so, by how much? The car was purchased from a VW dealer in 2015 as certified pre-owned with 2-year, 24,000 mile warranty, but that has expired. The oil leaks did not trigger a dashboard warning light. I also had not noticed any oil in the driveway, but neighborhood shop mechanic did point out oil in two places on the underside cover he removed for oil change. I am using the car vary sparingly at the moment while I research the problem and pricing. I would be very grateful for any info that people can provide. Thanks.
