Tech Tips (MDI Functions with iPhone 5 Variants (5, 5c, 5s and iPad fourth generation, iPod Nano seventh generation)):
The Apple iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, and iPhone 5s, as well as the iPad 4th generation and iPod Nano 7th generation use a proprietary ?Lightning? connector that is different than the 30-pin dock connector found on previous iPhone and iPad/iPod models.
A new MDI cable (?MDI Adapter Cable ? Lightning Charger?) is now available through the VW Accessories eCatalog that is made for use with iPhone 5 variants as well as the previously mentioned iPad/iPod models. This cable should provide full functionality on any vehicle equipped with a UMI (Unified Multimedia Interface). On MY 13 and older vehicles equipped with an MDI, the software level of the MDI must be at or above SW 240 (see Technical Bulletin 2024337) in order to be fully functional.
