I started noticing squealing brakes at about 9000 miles but when taken to the VW dealer they said my brakes were fine. I didn't drive much but after another year of ongoing squealing roughly 20000 miles again took in for service and they said brakes were fine. I started noticing steering wheel vibration when braking on freeways and its taking longer to slow the vehicle. Now the warranty just expired so I decided to take it to a different mechanic and he said that my rotors are warped.
I don't see how this can be possible with a new car with such low miles and light use. I believe it has something to do with the adaptive cruise functionality as the car tends to get too close to vehicles ahead and hits the brakes hard. To avoid this, I have to keep the distance setting to 3 as 1 will just cause the brakes to constantly engage in traffic in a horrible fashion.
Either way, I feel that this should be a recall item. It's not safe to suggest to people that brakes will last 50k miles and they start going out at 9k. If someone gets hurt as a result of this issue, VW is going to be in for another scandal. Update the adaptive cruise firmware and replace prematurely worn brake pads, rotors and calipers if needed but do it now!
