Recently my 2014 VW Passat started making a whirring whining noise when steering, particularly when turning corners. The car is a lease that I have had for 2.5 years. The vehicle has approximately 60,000 miles, mostly freeway. Imagine my horror when the dealer informed that my entire steering assembly will need to be replaced at a cost of $2,300 and that it was not safe to drive. There was no leaking fluid or anything. Apparently the fluid is not flowing correctly within the enclosed system. The service advisor informed me that this should not happen on such a new vehicle and advised me to contact VW customer service. I have also spoken with another foreign mechanic who agreed--something like this should never happen and that the assembly should last the life of the vehicle. My complaint has been logged with VW customer service and assigned to a regional rep. The vehicle is no longer under warranty. We will see what comes of the discussion between the regional rep and the dealer. If VW is not going to cover this, it won't be the last that they will be hearing from me. No one should have to shell out $2300 on a two year old car. But given their whole diesel debacle I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
