VW had some issues with rear coil springs on other models and years as VW recalled 56,000 vehicles a short while back. This model and year were not part of the recall. I think it is rare for a rear coil spring to break. Don't recall any big potholes or road issues that would have stressed the spring coil to the point of breaking. The car only has 85K miles however it has always been in Minnesota so maybe too much road salt corroded the part? I couldn't tell any drivability issues. The mechanic pointed it out while in for an oil change so I had them replace both rear coil springs.
