The Window regulators on these and other VW's are major problems. There are newsgroups/blogs online that talk about replacing the parts up to 9 times. Replacement is fairly easy to do, but this is again one of those situations where VW should take the bite on the butt and do a recall on a faulty component.
The problem is that they built the old regulators out of plastic and they break. Online users mention breaking them simply by slamming the door! Anyway, this is another part that you should not take back to the VW dealer to rip you off with. You can do the work in about an hour to replace the regulators once you get them. They seem to fail about the same time.
