This is a well known problem in vehicles with the Bosch ABS control module (Audi's, VW's, etc). Don't take it to the shop. You can buy a rebuilt module for about $350.00 or have yours rebuilt for about $150.00 at http://www.modulemaster.com/vwabsbsrepair.html. I'm not doing any advertisement for them, just trying to save someone else money. The entire removal/replacement takes about 1.5 hours.
This should be something that VW recalls, but they have refused to do that.
