This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
The engine cuts out without warning while I am driving. I have not bee rear ended but I'm afraid that I might be. When the engine dies I pull to the side of the road with any remaining power. After 30 seconds to 1 minute I'm able to restart the engine and proceed. I have had the vechicle towed 2 times to the Volkswagen Audi dealership here in las vegas. The first time the dealer did recall work on the engine, changed the timing belts and air filter. The second time the dealer blamed the problem on a faulty ignition switch. After picking up the car my husband and I have still experienced the engine cutting out. This is a potentially dangerous problem especially in las vegas where the traffic is intense. I have read online at a tdi forum that other owners of this car have experienced this problem and that it may be due to a faulty relay in the fuse box.

While traveling on interstate 95 in the passing lane at 70 mph, the car engine suddenly died and would not restart for 30 seconds, necessitating quick manuevering to the break down lane to avoid an accident.
Engine intermittent stalling. Occurs during acceleration & steady speed. Hot or cold. No identifiable pattern. If car dies, it will start right up (most times it just surges & does not actually die). The surging motion can last between 15 & 45 secs. Has occured 4 previous times (thats prompted this complaint). Previous occurrences: 8/19/97 8,658 mi; 6/19/98 18,413 mi; 7/31/98 19,841 mi; 9/14/98 21,402. Completely frustrated and concerned dealer will bill me when I take the car in the 5th time to repair something that should have been fixed a year and a half ago.
