Very disappointed that there is little to no help available to troubleshoot this issue without having to replace the Module. This is a very expensive repair and a huge safety issue as if the unit fails you do not have steering. This was a poor engineering design and not very long term reliable.

Jetta SportWagen SE Tdi

  • Automatic transmission
  • 73,000 miles

A mile into my drive home the wagon started throwing every code it had, oil pressure, low tire pressure, oil change, etc. after cycling through a dozen codes, the finally stalled and would not start, nor shift out of park. Imagine the difficulty of towing a car with an automatic transmission that's stuck in park. After three tow trucks and 10 hours, someone finally found a tow truck with a dolly to get the wagon to the closest dealer.

The car was at the dealer for two weeks before they could diagnose the problem because the power steering module prevented the scan tool from communicating with the ECU. They checked grounds and each module individually to identify what component was causing the issue.

After two weeks and $700 in diagnostic fees, We got to the root of the problem; Power Steering Module failed which cause communication issues with ECU. Then I was told that VW no longer makes the part (strange, because the car isn't 5 years old yet) and it would be two more weeks before the part could be found and shipped to Phoenix.

Fortunately, the service guy called and said they found a re-manufactured unit (full warranty) that could arrive in two days.

Cost so far: $2,700 for the part and installation + $700 Diagnostic fees = $3,400
