It was approximately 9:30am on Thursday April 4th 2019 on QEW heading into Hamilton Ontario, Canada. I was in the far-left lane, going approximately 100km/h and I started hearing what sounded like gun shots in my car. I had no idea what had happened but started to slow down and put my right blinker on to try to get to the shoulder. I started hearing the wind loudly through the screen of the sun roof and looked up and that’s when I noticed that my sun roof had shattered. There was no loud bang. Nothing dropped from the sky, nor did something hit me from a nearby truck etc… The hole in my sunroof was about 80% of the sunroof.
I, and other surrounding drivers are very lucky that I generally do not panic easily and can quickly evaluate a situation and find a solution. Had I been someone to slam on the brakes, or swerve off the road, this situation could have ended very differently. Never mind that having the screen closed prevented glass shattering into my lap and car.
I am aware of current pending class action lawsuits in the USA and have saved some of the glass should anyone want to test it for nickel sulfide. As far as I can tell, the last reported Jetta incident was in 2017.
I suppose as a percentage of cars sold, VW Canada may say that it’s hard to determine the cause of this or chalk it up as to something out of the ordinary. That being said, as a consumer of VW I feel I have a responsibility to ensure that I do my part bring this dangerous defect to the right entity so it doesn’t happen to someone else or cause serious injury.
