Once again, on a family vacation - driving through western Nebraska along I-80 and the car lost throttle response at highway speeds. I was able to get it safely to the shoulder of the road where the engine promptly died. At this point, no EPC or check engine light is illuminated. Car wouldn't start for 15 min (would turn over but wouldn't stay running). At this point, the EPC and check engine light illuminate along with "stop/start system error", "engine RPM limited to 4000", replace key fob battery".
The car did eventually restart and idled smoothly, but as soon as you'd try to move, it would run rough and die. Ended up having VW Roadside Assistance set up a tow to the nearest VW dealer (2.5hrs away). Long story short, the VW dealer in Greeley, CO stated that the instrument cluster had failed and that they had to replace it, reprogram the key fobs and immobilizer. Never in my life of automobile ownership have I had an instrument cluster failure, let alone on a "new" vehicle.
