Not too cold (about 50F), but definitely wet! The wipers stopped while I was driving in heavy rain in the middle of a neighborhood, thankfully. If it was the highway, who knows what would've happened. You can hear the motor churning and it'll keep going until you manually force the blades to cycle through. I had to have it towed since the rain would not let up. I stay on top of changing my blades seasonally. Non-dealer shop quoted $725 to replace the motor (with non-OEM parts).

Jetta TDI

  • Automatic transmission
  • 88,000 miles

Just adding my complaint to the numerous ones before me. I bought a 2012 Jetta TDI for my 150 mile commute ( round trip) each day to work. I live in the White Mountains and we have many cold days this time of year and lots of snow and other precipitation. If it's below freezing my wipers won't work. Like others I assumed the first time it happened it could be a fuse. It was a sunny day so I drove it to work and planned on stopping at parts store on way home to buy fuses. When I left work wipers were once again working. Car had been sitting all day in the sun. This was first time of many that cold weather has caused them not to work.

I stopped the 2nd time at VW dealership in Tilton NH and they wanted $120.00 just to hook car up to diagnose issue. That's ridiculous, and of course they never mentioned it's a common issue. With all the negative publicity VW has received over their fraudulent emissions scandal you would think they would want to issue a recall for this safety issue. Besides this problem I'm totally happy with the car.

Jetta Sportline 2.5L 5 cyl

  • Manual transmission
  • 59,652 miles

We have rough winters in my area and sometimes the roads would become very slushy. I activated the wipers and they were not operating at all. The wiper motor had to be replaced at the dealer and Volkswagen didn't seem to be very worried about this safety concern. Thankfully I was parked and not rolling. This could have been a serious issue on the highway.

Jetta Comfortline 2.0L

As Temperature in Alberta Dropped -20 wipers wont work at all, washier fluid comes but no movement until i warms up in the garage , it happen the same last year when similar temperatures.

Dealership don't know the issue, is not a fuse and is not the wiper motor. Also when you lock doors it doesn't ring.

It's very annoying.

I've had this car for 3 winters and the wipers work fine in the warm weather but not in the winter. When it is rainy or snowy and then the temperatures are close to freezing the wipers won't work. If I then drive for a while without them and then let the car sit for at least twenty minutes they then come on. I have driven for at least two hours and they still won't come on though until the car is turned off for an amount of time. It is very dangerous as one time I forgot to check if they were working and washed my windshield. I then could not see as washer fluid covered the windshield but the wipers would not come on. There does not seem to be a problem with the motor though as they work perfectly in the warm weather. It seems more like a defect that water is getting in and freezing somehow.
