CarComplaints.com Notes: Digging through the long list of NHTSA complaints about a sudden loss of engine power and the high pressure fuel pump failing, it's never good to come across the "my car (with a cold engine) set itself on fire in the middle of the night" complaint.

Traveling home from ball game the engine light came on and engine began to lose power. We continued to drive home an additional 1.5 km during last few meters the engine light began to blink and the engine continually lost power until we crested a slight hill at the top of our driveway when the engine quit and never restarted. A quick Google search suggested the most likely was the high pressure fuel pump had failed. We do not have a dealer in our town so I called the closest dealer who suggested the vehicle would need to be towed to them at my cost. We trailered the car 300km to the dealer. The dealer performed tests that confirmed not only had the HPFP failed but the entire fuel system down stream had ingested the debris from the failing fuel pump causing the entire fuel system to fail. The dealer also indicated the powertrain warranty may not cover the repair if any issue was discovered in the fuel. A fuel sample was sent for analysis while we waited. The repair was quoted to come in around 10k if not warranty, I advised not to repair if not warranty which extended the time we were without the vehicle. The dealer advised VW agreed to warrant the repair. The dealer had me sign the warranty invoice which was just over $9200.00, unbelievable! The car was probably worth 12k at the time of the repair and only 2.5 years old.
