Traveling home from ball game the engine light came on and engine began to lose power. We continued to drive home an additional 1.5 km during last few meters the engine light began to blink and the engine continually lost power until we crested a slight hill at the top of our driveway when the engine quit and never restarted. A quick Google search suggested the most likely was the high pressure fuel pump had failed. We do not have a dealer in our town so I called the closest dealer who suggested the vehicle would need to be towed to them at my cost. We trailered the car 300km to the dealer. The dealer performed tests that confirmed not only had the HPFP failed but the entire fuel system down stream had ingested the debris from the failing fuel pump causing the entire fuel system to fail. The dealer also indicated the powertrain warranty may not cover the repair if any issue was discovered in the fuel. A fuel sample was sent for analysis while we waited. The repair was quoted to come in around 10k if not warranty, I advised not to repair if not warranty which extended the time we were without the vehicle. The dealer advised VW agreed to warrant the repair. The dealer had me sign the warranty invoice which was just over $9200.00, unbelievable! The car was probably worth 12k at the time of the repair and only 2.5 years old.

Purchased car less than 2 weeks previously, dealer was unsure about warranty so I didn't purchase one thinking a reputable car would be under warranty at least until 60K miles-BIG mistake. The HPFD piece failed and I had small metal pieces throughout the engine. Dealer said it was because of contaminated fuel-or I had put unleaded in the diesel-which didn't happen. Fuel was purchased from a reputable station. Took 2 weeks to fix, dealer suggested I use my comprehensive insurance coverage to get repair done. It raised my insurance rates. After reading the site, see this is a COMMON repair-wish I had known about it prior.

Driving on local freeway felt a shudder and experienced a sudden loss of acceleration, the Coil light came on dash.

Thank goodness I was literally 1/4 mile from the VW dealership and was able to drive it in.

This was a Saturday around 4:30pm dealer told me HPFP failed and would need complete fuel system overhaul approx 8k-10k but that they have been seeing these and they have been covered by VW.

The dealership was great and I got the car back on that Mon, I asked them if any changes had been made to avoid this happening again they said no. I am VERY concerned that this could happen again. If it had happened LAST weekend while I was in LA traffic with a young mother and baby in the car it could have been catastrophic.
