CarComplaints.com Notes: Digging through the long list of NHTSA complaints about a sudden loss of engine power and the high pressure fuel pump failing, it's never good to come across the "my car (with a cold engine) set itself on fire in the middle of the night" complaint.

Bought brand new VW Jetta from dealer with 8 miles on odometer. Several years later, the tire pressure light started to go on. Had it looked at, no issue ever found. The the tire light would go on, followed by all the dash lights and car would die. Car has under 36,000 miles. Has been to two separate dealers and neither able to replicate the problem. Connecting to the car's computer to check status not helpful either. Of course, it is no longer under warranty. Even when it was, the dealers were not able to identify any specific problem. It was recently discovered that the vehicle had an after market tracking device. We knew nothing about it but in discussing with another dealer, we were told these items are often installed by the dealers to keep track of inventory. They apparently try to sell them when you purchase the car but we were never informed such a device was on the vehicle. Not sure how this relates to the electrical function anyway, and why would the car work well for the first three years anyway? It was also suggested it could be a bad module but again no warranty. The latest suggestion is to replace the harness. I still wonder if it's related to faulty wiring or a short. VW consumer affairs not very concerned about the safety issue of the car losing power while it's being driven. Given the fraud the auto manuacturer committed, it is unsettling that the company is not more willing to work with their customers and be responsible for issues that clearly are related to manuacturers defects. I wonder if other VW Jetta owners experienced similar failures and if they were able to have the problem correctly diagnosed and fixed.
