CarComplaints.com Notes: Digging through the long list of NHTSA complaints about a sudden loss of engine power and the high pressure fuel pump failing, it's never good to come across the "my car (with a cold engine) set itself on fire in the middle of the night" complaint.

various lights & other electrical failures

My seatbelt light came on, despite being the only human in the car and having my seatbelt equipped. My phone was in the passenger seat, so maybe that's what the car wanted to be secured. Or it was the ghost of my dignity. I look over to the passenger seat, and whoops, now I'm in a ditch. Gotta email my boss!

Now abs light, tire sensor light, traction control, seat belt light still taunts me, and every other electrical component of the car malfunctions. We ziptied the transmission back on, so that's good. VERY DISAPPOINTED in the performance of my Jetta. Couldn't even handle a little ditch.

Jetta SE 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 50,000 miles

I have owned this vehicle for nearly 5 years. Had around 18,000 miles at purchase. Car operated fine for first 2-3 years, but started to have strange issues pop up. Some examples...

-Tail lights would intermittently fail to come on. This only would be one of the lights, not both. Would come back on when I smacked the light. Seemed light a possible short, replaced bulbs, but would still happen.

-Low Beam headlights would burn out after a very short lifespan. Had instances when headlights appeared burned out, but would "magically" come on when I would jiggle to connection to pull the light out of the housing. Now, I have a drivers side light that won't come on, even after replacing bulb.

-Accessory port (cigarette lighter) will not provide power to phone charger.

-Passenger airbag light is illuminated.

All of these issues seem to be related to to electrical system. I have read various threads and recalls on similar VW vehicles that suggest electrical systems on these cars are FUBAR, but not enough to warrant a recall. I have given this car to my college age son, but I am extremely concerned about the headlight issue and him driving at night. Certainly seems to fit in to recall criteria.
