I have a 2.5L 2008 VW Jetta SE with 141,000 miles, and the rear passenger door doesn't lock or unlock with the remote. It was working on and off for a while and now it's completely not working. Therefore, when I use the remote to lock all doors, all doors lock properly except for the rear passenger door. So anyone can open the rear passenger door at any time. The only good thing is it does sound the alarm.
Also, when rear passenger door doesn't lock/unlock with the remote, you don't hear the chirping beep anymore. Only the lights blink.
The prior owner told me that her driver door also had this problem and had to pay $680 for the VW dealer to fix it. In some cases, some user's VW door can't even be opened manually from inside, which creates dangerous situation. Upon google-ing, I can see that VW door lock problems are very common issue on many models for many years, and I'm surprised that VW couldn't fix this design issue and issue a safety recall.
