The 1995 2.5 liter Jetta was purchased used on 10/20/08 from Brown's Fairfax Mazda (Dealer #57477). The car had 57477 miles and was reported in excellent condition. A couple of years later I noticed that the Sun Roof began to randomly open and close--often several times in a row. I also noted that when the Front Driver's Door was open, the window would not respond, but once nearly closed the function was normal.
On 07/26/2011 I took the Jetta to Fairfax Volkswagen for a screeching sound when temperature was over 80 degrees and steering wheel was turned. I also informed them of the Sun Roof problem. This work was largely covered by an extended warranty. The Service Adviser (Dennis Hultman) said the battery needed to be replaced, low voltage responsible for the Sun Roof issues. Steering noise was mostly corrected. No mention was made by the Service Adviser of any possible related electrical issues.
A few months later the Sun Roof began its random opening/closing, the passenger window would sometimes not close unless switch was held until closed. The trunk began to show as open on the instrument panel, when it was closed. This took several attempts before the trunk open light would go off. I have basically not used the trunk in a couple of years because of this.
Lacking warranty coverage by this point, I chose to live with the inconveniences which seemed not to be safety related. In June of this year the Seat Belt Failure Light came on and stayed on--another electrical issue. The problem is that this must be fixed prior to passing state inspection and my sole income is Federal Disability which does not allow me to financially afford efforts to repair this latest issue.
Since the other issues have been included in a Class Action Suit, and this issue is obviously related and is indeed a safety concern, will Volkswagen have to offer a repair at no charge to me? The only local VW Dealer told me that VW would not pay for the repair and that diagnostics alone would cost nearly $100. I must have the car inspected by the end of this October. I have yet to receive a letter confirming that I am included in the class action suit, but even if I am I understand that it will likely take much longer than a few months to implement.
I don't know what to do. Should I try calling VW directly? Frankly I am appalled that the automaker has even contested repairing what are obviously electrical faults basic to their design. Any assistance would be much appreciated.
