My first and second gears have been sporadically grinding ever since I bought the car. Three times they refused to fix it because they haven't heard it. Fourth time they heard it, but wouldn't fix it because they didn't hear it when I returned for the service.
This manual transmission from day one has had clear troubles engaging into reverse without engaging reverse first, also has problems shifting between 1st & 2nd gears in higher RPM ranges 3500 RPM and above...always grinds while shifting.
When shifting into second gear, there was a grinding noise, dealer replaced syncro gear, consumer picked up vehicle and fifth gear slipped twice, second, third, and reverse were grinding, dealer now stated that the shifting alignment was off, causing the gears to grind, vehicle has not been remedied.

When shifting from 1st into 2nd gear, transmission grinds, 1st,2nd, & 3rd gear sincro's have been replaced w/ only 5000 miles on new car. Still shifts hard into 2nd gear & sometimes will not shift at all into 2nd gear. Apperantly Volkswagen is now saying that synthetic transmition fluid is going to fix the problem. Dash indicator lights will sometimes go bright and then dim, makes it hard to see insturment panel at night
Second transmission failure for this car, unsure if the dealer in fact replaced origional. Also have noticed speedometer making a clicking sound at all speeds
First failure while getting on freeway. Dealer service had car for 38 days, 2 or 3 rebuild attempts before telling me a new transmission was installed. Problem was in reverse gear, said output shaft was bent. Two months later the transmission suffered another failure of the same type while on vacation in san fransisco. Dealer is telling me user abuse, I know of 6 other 1999 and 2000 Jetta's that have had manule transmission failures
