sudden disruptions when refueling yet tank not full

At one time it did smell like fuel or something similar inside the cabin. That went away. Now when im refueling the gas pump abruptly stops when there still plenty gas to put in. I just keep pumping until it reaches full and I already know how many gallons it takes.
