ABS, ESC and Handbrake lights came on. Booked the car in with VW dealer who did diagnostics. Problem with ABS regulator and it had to be replaced at a cost of NZ$4,350 excluding labour. VW did not have part in NZ as the last one was taken by another dealership the same day my car was booked in. This indicate to me that it is a fairly common problem. I took car to an auto-electrician who ran his own diagnostics. Same diagnosis but he offered me a reconditioned ABS regulator for NZ$750. He also told me that the unit on my model of Golf was a sealed unit which could not be repaired and that it was a common problem with the Golf.
The solution is to find a auto-electrician who has the diagnostic equipment and can find you a reconditioned ABS regulator to put into your car.
