The flange that attaches the rubber hose to the plastic outlet flange itself had degraded from heat and began leaking coolant. I bought the flange ($50) and replaced it myself.
Note to VW engineering: Plastic does not withstand heat well - see this complaint and complaint about coil pack wiring harness Plastic and rubber do not withstand organic solvents (hot oil) well -- see complaint about PCV system.
