I was told that the seatbelt switch assembly is needed for the seatbelt to work properly in the event of a crash. This is a major safety issue and Volkswagen should be responsible for the replacement, not the consumer. If there was an accident, the seatbelt would not lock, and the driver would be thrown forward into the airbag. If there was such an accident, there would have been a lawsuit against Volkswagen.
