All the plastic parts inside keep breaking and I baby this car. The window switches have broken twice, the parts to the sunroof assembly have broken and I rarely open my sunroof. The knob to my heating and air broke, so even though the AC was fine I couldn't turn in on. Now my FM button for my radio doesn't work so I can't turn on the FM part. The rubber on the door handles were already peeling when I bought the car with 15K miles on it. The shifter vinyl is all cracked and junky looking. The speaker cover cracked when my husbands foot touched it. It's like the plastic in these cars can't handle the extreme heat that builds up in cars during the summer. I've done my best to keep this car like new, but the car just is determined to recycle itself around me. I'm so disappointed in VW for using such CHEAP components!!!!
Update from Mar 4, 2013: Replaced window switches at 30,000 miles in 2006. Then I had to replace them again in 2009 at 70,000 miles.
