Shop manager rode with me and heard the noise but did not know what was causing it. After looking at it all day in the service shop, I was told by the VW Service repair that this is normal engine noise for the VW Atlas engine. BS. Did not have the noise at first when the car was new but started to hear around 5,000 miles. Still there and more noticeable at 10K when my car went in for the warranty service. I drove an new Atlas and the noise is not there.
