I purchased my car used about a year ago from a private party. I was about to merge onto a freeway onramp, waiting at the light, when my Yaris stalls. Luckily I was able to push it to the side of road, with the help of my passenger brother, and call the Auto Club for a tow. Both my brother the Auto Club asked if the car was out of gas? I told the Club and my bro that I did not believe I was out of gas because my fuel gauge still showed two bars of gas. Once it was towed and at my home, I added a gallon of gas and it started up right away.

I record my gas mileage by resetting the trip meter every time I fill up. At the time of my onramp stall, I had logged 340 miles on my 11 gallon gas tank. I just thought I was getting incredible highway fuel mileage! Now I know not trust that fuel gauge, and fill up every time before I reach 300 miles. That's my solution.

My car, 2007 Toyota Yaris hatchback, stopped working when I was driving on the street in rush hour. Luckily, I had no accident, and I pulled my car to the right side. First, I didn't think it's fuel gauge as I saw fuel was in 3 levels. My mechanic checked it. He found that gas was empty, so the fuel gauge had error. He changed new OEM gauge from Toyota. However, the problem is still exist as now I keep recording miles and fuel every time. Please, be careful if you have the same model of my car as you might get in accident if you drive on freeway.

As I was driving down the interstate, my car suddenly started to shut down. I was able to pull to the side of the road and turned the key to the off position. After 5 minutes, I tried to restart my car but the car would not start. I checked my fuel gauge which showed 1/2 tank. I was able to call a family member to come pick me up, they examined the vehicle and could not figure out what might be the problem. They came back with gas and put it in the car and the car started to work. Since then I have filled up the gas tank and once I get to about 1/2 a tank the gauge gets really faulty. I tried to take it to one of those Firestone places yesterday and was told I would have to take it to the dealership to be looked at. The car only has ~125,000 miles on it and is in great shape. I'm thankful it was something as easy as gas when it shut off but it's really scary to have your car shut down while going down the interstate, this could have been a very dangerous situation.
