Again alternator failed; seems to us its a bad design .
Toyota shouldn't put a alternator on the bottom of the engine where salt; water and debris collect; shorting out or corroding alternator and belt.
Again it needs to go to the repair shop.
Not too happy; we have been loyal to Toyota; I think they need to admit this is an issue of terrible design; and those having issues should be repaired at no cost in the areas of bad weather where salt is used on the roads.
I BROUGHT MY TUNDRA TO THE DEALERSHIP TWICE COMPLAINING OF A WHINING NOISE BUT THEY COULDN'T FIND THE PROBLEM....SHORTLY AFTER IT DIED ON ME IN 5'OCLOCK TRAFFIC OUT OF TOWN...JUST COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN...MAJOR ISSUE.
I ALSO NOTICED THE PAINT DISCOLORATION WHEN I BOUGHT THE TRUCK IN 2008 AND THE EARLY RUST THEN. I LOVE MY TRUCK BECAUSE OF THE WAY IT DRIVES BUT THIS PROBLEM REALLY THREW ME BACK AND MUCH DISCOURAGES ME FROM BUYING ANOTHER TOYOTA IN THE FUTURE.
We had to replace the alternator 2 times in less than 10 years. The first time we replaced the alternator with a brand new alternator at a Toyota dealership in 2014 (99k miles). It failed again recently (2017-160,000k). Also the power locks stopped working in 2013. This has been an expensive truck and we are disappointed in Toyota. They cannot figure out the source of the alternator fails.
Update from Mar 14, 2017: UPDATE: Alternator was replaced in 2012 (99k miles) and again this year 2017 (160k miles)
We bought this truck in 2008, brand new. In 2012, we had to replace the alternator (99K) with a brand new alternator and then again 2017 (160k). There have been 3 alternators in less than 10 years! Also the power lock stopped working in 2013.
