One day while starting my truck to go to work , I hear a loud vacuum sound coming from the engine and lasted about eight seconds. The same thing happens when starting the truck to come home from work. After three days of this, I researched the problem and find out its a smog pump. I then look on YouTube for a fix and find a very detailed video. It walks you through how to do it, what parts you need, how much for the parts and where to purchase. Even discussed a quick fix for about 35 dollars and how it doesn't fix the problem and could be bad if you are caught while getting a smog inspection. Anyway, I was able to do it myself and it wasn't easy.
COMPLAINT HERE IS IF THE SAME PART WAS COVERED FOR DIFFERENT YEARS, WHY DOESNT TOYOTA COVER ALL MODELS THAT HAVE THE SAME PART. WHY WOULD THEY DO THAT. IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH A PART COVER IT. THE MODEL YEAR IS NOT A ISSUE THE PART IS. SO MY MODEL 2005 GUESS WHAT WAS NOT COVERED TO THE TUNE OF $1,000.00 AND 6 MONTHS OUT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AGAIN. NO NOISE THIS TIME BUT WHEN CKED IT SHOWS THE SAME PROBLEM COMING UP. PROBABLY ONE OF THE 5 LITTLE FANS HAS STOPPED. I'M NOT SO SURE THOSE WERE REPLACED WHEN THE REPAIR WAS DONE.
It doesn't surprise me that Toyota wouldn't include the 2005 Tundra in the recall! They only have it for the 2007-2010 models. I'm reading this cost $2,200 to $3,000 dollars to replace! And Toyota clearly knows about the problem but wants to screw their customers over. The truck does have 180,000 miles but I've read other people with this same problem with half the miles!
The Maintenance Required light lit up some time in early 2015. I was still busy processing my mother's death, and estate, so had to ignore this but noticed I couldn't clear the message, which I thought was odd. Messages ENG P1442, and OBD P1445 - Secondary air injection system switching valve #2 Bank 1 stuck closed. I don't use this truck very regularly, so at the time figured this would be an easy fix. Apparently, NOT, after reading some of the messages posted about this error and the fact Toyota decided not to include this year in the warranty recall. Great.
I have about 99,000 miles on the truck now at the first of December and I have to get this fixed in order to pass inspection. In May I had brought the truck to Fred Haas on Hwy 249, in Houston, to have the faulty air bag replaced and they ran inspection on it. They ignored the maintenance light, though I had mentioned it to them, but seemed to find other items they deemed needed repair/maintenance for a total of $3,200. Nice. Didn't get any of that done and it is still running fine. Anyway, the last place I would ever get anything repaired out of warranty, is a dealership. Dealerships are usually three times the cost of my regular mechanic, who has been extremely fair on estimates, work, cost, and reliability . Corb's Auto Repair on Grant Rd in Houston, TX. Family owned and Christian too. Lots of people in my neighborhood use them.

I have read others that have registered a complaint about the secondary air pump and want to add to it. This is a problem that Toyota should take ownership for and replace for free or at least a nominal price. 2 plus g's is outrageous!
Tundra started acting "dead" when going uphill, or giving it gas on thruway. Check engine light on. Dealer says bad air injection driver, needs replaced.. Well then it needs air pump, then it needs intake manifold. Where does this end??? Up to $2200 out of pocket, no warranty.
We purchased this truck from the Toyota dealership with only 83,000 thousand miles on it. The truck had all services done at dealership, on time. I reported the problem to the dealership and was told Toyota had issued a service bulletin for the issue with the secondary air injection issue but only on the 2007-2010 models. after doing some research I discovered this is a common problem on the 2005-2006 models as well.
There is a Known Problem with the air induction pump on 2005 Toyota Trucks. Toyota has decided to extend the warranty on 2007 to 2009 trucks but will not cover 2005 and 2006 trucks. I was told that Toyota has not received enough complaints about it. Anyone who reads this please file a complaint with Toyota. 2007 - 2009 Tundra owners who paid for repairs before the extended warranty received refunds. I will also be contacting the EPA and the Highway safety admin. and anyone else who will listen. This is a 3000.00 to 5000.00 dollar fix and many owners are bypassing the computer in the truck because they can't afford the repair which is affecting the emissions and making the truck pollute more.
For the record I have owned 2 Toyota's, my mother has owned two and my father has owned two. The Tundra pickup has 60000 miles on it and requires a $3500 repair. My Camry on the other hand has 190,000 miles and I've only changed the battery. Apparently Toyota now has name brand recognition and is no longer willing to stand behind their vehicles. Then again I guess they don't have to. My next car will be a KIA
IT'S NOT A VERY GOOD FEELING WHEN YOU SPEND $30,000 ON A NEW VEHICLE.AND, 8 YEARS LATER, SPEND $4,000 TO FIX THE PROBLEM. GREAT JOB TOYOTA. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. YOU THINK I SHOULD GO OUT AND BUY A NEW TUNDRA FOR SAY AROUND $48,000?
Found out this was a problem with other 05 tundra owners but Toyota only extended the warranty for models 07 and up. I had the exact same problem with my 05 that 07 and up owners described. Called Toyota and they said I would get a full refund. They called me back in about 10 minutes and said they made a mistake and would only give me $750. instead of the full $3000. it cost me. My opinion.....GOT SCREWED BY TOYOTA!!
